FileBank’s IT Sales Manager, David Mielke, was given the 2013 Urban Hero award presented by The Etobicoke Guardian on Monday June 24, 2013. David enjoyed working with homeless youth at Youth Without Shelter (YWS) so much he became the chair of its board.
David first connected with YWS—the singular Etobicoke emergency residence and referral agency dedicated to providing shelter and shelter programs for homeless youth ages 16 to 24—in the late 1990’s when he was searching for a charitable organization to which his company, FileBank, could provide Christmas donations. Since then, he has pitched in to help wherever needed, participating on YWS’ fundraising committee, then joining its board of directors before becoming its chair.
His business acumen and exceptional leadership consistently challenges board members to explore new ideas and to look to the shelter’s future. His creativity inspired what has become a YWS tradition of recognition: a miniature wooden bed he has handcrafted, given as tokens of appreciation to donors and event guests.
